Zuo Xiang (sitting and facing)
The direction a building backs onto and the one it faces — the baseline for every judgement.
Sitting and facing name the direction a building sets its back to and the direction it looks out on; the two are always opposite. For the form school this line divides front from back, so the siting rule, the table hill and the water gate are all read along it; for the compass school it is matched against the life gua to grade directions. MYEONG asks for it first because nothing else has an orientation until this one line is fixed.
